Al-Dabbagh: The Iraqi Government decides to Rehabilite Abu Ghraib prison
The Government of Iraq Spokesman Dr. Ali Al-Dabbagh announced that The Council of Ministers has approved the proposal by the Ministry of Defense to form a committee from the Ministries of Defense, Interior and Justice to follow up the contracting process for the rehabilitation of the Abu Ghraib prison, and secure supplies for inmates and internal and external Prison Protection Units.
Al-Dabbagh added that a section of the current building will be transformed into a museum documenting crimes of the former regime. The Museum exhibits will include torture tools left over from the previous regime like a long segmented Iron chain that was used to chain dozens of prisoners together and transport them form place to the other. The Museum will also display torture chambers and execution materials.
Al-Dabbagh explained that the rehabilitation will take place in stages beginning with the prison main building and outer fence and observation towers, and then concentrate on sections with better conditions in order to isolate them from the work site and start utilizing them. After that illegal occupants will be evicted from staff residential units. END
